A 16 inch – 42 cm Vintage African Palm Leaf lid with a geometric pattern. They would make wonderful wall decorations.
These unusual lids were in fact used for cooking and preparation of food by the Touareg/Haussa or Songhaï People in Niger. They are made from palm tree leaves. The fibres are then dyed with parts of the tree such as bark, leaves and the roots. The baskets follow set designs which mirror the natural world around them.
An example the lids can be found in the Horniman Museum
