Silk Kaitag hand dyed and embroidered panel
Silk Kaitag hand dyed and embroidered panel.
This technique of weaving from the Caucasus are an under-recognized and extremely rare art form. They were made primarily by women during the 1600’s and 1700’s. The technique was not encouraged during the Soviet era and Kaitags are traditionally made with silk floss that is stitched and couched to a plain cotton backing. Colours featured in these elegant embroideries include sophisticated earth tones, vibrant primary colours and hues that have prompted comparisons with abstract works of art of by 20th century artists.
