Kaitag style surface darned embroidered cushions
A collection of Kaitag style surface darned embroidered cushions, where silk threads are carefully applied using the rare couching stitch technique. The flowing, painterly designs are rooted in centuries-old ceremonial textiles.
The antique Caucasian embroideries were made using three embroidery stitches: cross-stitch, surface darning and diagonal surface darning.
The design elements are hand drawn by a master artisan onto the cotton ground cloth before the embroidery work commences. The embroidery is applied within a small wooden hoop. The hoop is moved over the surface of the ground cloth until the embroidery is completed.
